Where the
journey leads.

Mauritania holds landscapes and histories unknown to most of the world. Tap a destination to discover it.

UNESCO Heritage
Chinguetti
City of the seventh holy city of Islam
Once the seventh holiest city in Islam and a major Saharan caravan crossroads. Ancient libraries hold thousands of manuscripts dating back centuries. The dunes now encroach on its medieval mosques and ksar.
Wilderness
Erg Amatlich
The great golden dune sea
A vast ocean of amber and ochre dunes stretching to the horizon. Camp beneath a sky so thick with stars it seems three-dimensional. Wake to total silence and dune crests lit by first light.
Natural Wonder
Banc d'Arguin
Where Sahara meets Atlantic
A UNESCO World Heritage coastal park where desert dunes dissolve into Atlantic shallows. Home to millions of migratory birds and the Imraguen fishermen who have worked these waters for centuries using traditional sail canoes.
Capital
Nouakchott
Gateway to the Sahara
One of the world's youngest capital cities, founded in 1957. A vivid crossing point of Saharan and coastal cultures — bustling fish market, vibrant souks, and striking mosques beside Atlantic breeze and desert horizon.
Geological Marvel
Richat Structure
The Eye of the Sahara
A 50-kilometre concentric geological formation visible from space — once thought to be a meteor crater, now understood as an ancient dome of deeply eroded rock. Standing at its rim is humbling.

"To cross the Mauritanian Sahara is to understand what silence actually sounds like — and what it does to you."

— Yahya Ka · Founder, Private Mauritania

No mass tourism. No tourist traps. Mauritania receives a fraction of the visitors that Morocco or Senegal attract — meaning you experience it as it truly is: the immensity of the Sahara, ancient trading cities, living nomadic traditions, and an Atlantic coast that very few Westerners have ever walked.

Land with
ease.

Arriving in a new country — especially one this unfamiliar — can be disorienting. We make it seamless.

What you
need to know.

With proper local guidance and sensible planning, Mauritania is very manageable for private travel. Certain border regions require precaution, and we will always advise honestly on current conditions. We do not operate in areas we consider unsafe.

Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Nouakchott Oumtounsy International Airport. We guide you through the process beforehand so you arrive fully prepared. We can also assist with the paperwork if needed.

November through February offers the most comfortable conditions — warm days, cool nights, and minimal sandstorms. March and October are transitional. We can design meaningful journeys in any season, with honest briefings on what to expect.

For peak season (November–February) we recommend 4–8 weeks minimum. That said, we are experienced at assembling quality experiences quickly — reach out and tell us your dates and we'll see what we can do.

Absolutely. Much of what makes Private Mauritania special is that we work at an individual scale. Solo travelers, couples, small families, and small groups of friends are all welcome and common.

Accommodation, private ground transport, English-speaking local guides, all logistics, airport meet & assist, and full on-trip support. International flights are typically arranged separately. We'll be clear about what's included when we send your proposal.
